Philadelphie 76ers (4-33) - Atlanta Hawks (21-15)

The Atlanta Hawks (21-15) travel to Philadelphia on Wednesday night to meet a suddenly energized 76ers (4-23) team at Verizon Center.

Losers of three of their last four games, the Hawks have not started 2016 in the same fashion as they ended 2015 (winning six straight) and are once again looking very vulnerable in a fiercely competitive East. Atlanta lost at home to the New York Knicks on Monday night, 107-101, to maintain a tenuous grasp on fifth place in the conference. Although all five starters for the team managed to post scores in the double digits, they still weren't able to overcome hot scoring performances from their opponents. Paul Millsap led the Hawks with 19 points in the defeat, while Al Horford came just shy of a triple-double, putting in 13 points, 10 rebounds and 8 assists. The Hawks rank dead last in the NBA in rebounds, averaging 40.3 per game. Despite their recent struggles, the team remains only a half game behind the first place Miami Heat in the Southeast Division.

It may be difficult to come to terms with, but the Philadelphia 76ers may actually be the hotter team heading into Wednesday's match-up, having gone 3-3 in their last six outings. Philly bested the visiting Minnesota Timberwolves 109-99 on Monday night and are slowly looking like a somewhat respectable outfit in the process. One of the main reasons for the Sixers recent surge is new team toy Ish Smith, who once again led the way for the team with 21 points, going 9-for-16 from the field, and adding 11 assists. Nerlens Noel and Jahlil Okafor added 10 points apiece, with Noel also contributing 9 rebounds. Since Smith arrived in Philadelphia in December, the team has improved its shooting percentage by over 9 points per game, but still rank last in the league in offense, recording an average of only 92.9 points per contest. The team plays their next five games at home, where they are 2-12.

 Chicago Bulls (21-12) - Boston Celtics(19-15)

United Center will be the scene for an Eastern Conference clash on Wednesday night between the Boston Celtics (19-16) and Chicago Bulls (21-12).

The Celtics continue their road trip after dropping a game to the Detroit Pistons on Wednesday night, 99-94. The team struggled mightily on all ends of the floor, shooting a paltry 37.4% from the paint and 21.4% from long range in the loss. The club has struggled with their scoring efficiency all season, sitting at fourth-worst in the league with a 43.3% field goal average per game. Isaiah Thomas once again led Boston in scoring with 22 points and 10 assists, while Amir Johnson posted a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds. The Celtics have been nipping at the heels of the Toronto Raptors for first place in the Atlantic Division for the majority of their 2015-16 campaign, but now sit two games behind their division rivals. The two teams will meet on January 20th in Toronto.

Chicago has won five games in a row and are starting 2016 off as one of the hotter teams in the league, now sitting just three games behind the Cleveland Cavaliers for first place in the East. Their latest victory took place at home (where they own a 15-5 record) on Monday night where they made quick work of the Milwaukee Bucks, 117-106. Jimmy Butler once again delivered for the team with a 32-point, 10-assist performance, draining all eight of his shots from the foul line along the way. Butler is leading the Bulls in scoring this season, averaging 22.1 points per game. Both Pau Gasol and Taj Gibson had double-doubles in the game, with the tandem combining for 25 boards, one of the main reasons that the team ranks first in the league in rebounds.

Houston Rockets (17-19) - Utah Jazz (15-18)

The Utah Jazz (15-19) play the host Houston Rockets (17-19) at Toyota Center on Thursday.

The Jazz have won two of their last three games, but that's not indicative of their form. Since injuries to Derrick Favors, Alec Burks and Rudy Gobert, the team has really struggled. The bigger worry is on the defensive end, as they have regressed a lot since the injury bug bit them a few weeks back. Their most recent game was a nightmare in which they lost to the San Antonio Spurs, while allowing 122 points on over 60 percent shooting. The one bright spot in that loss is that the starters got to sit in the fourth quarter and rest for this back-to-back. In the first game against Houston, the Jazz lost a nail biter 93-91 and had some poor late game execution.

The Rockets have lost four of their last five coming into this and the defense has been horrendous. They now rank 26th in points allowed and have regularly been allowing 110-plus as of late. It's hard to put a finger on why the team is so bad defensively with players like Patrick Beverley, Trevor Ariza and Dwight Howard, but they need to do a better job of stopping transition baskets. The resurgence of Howard is a promising sign though, as he is averaging 22.3 points and 13.5 rebounds over his last four games. With Howard playing like this and James Harden putting up the gaudy numbers he is right now, it's hard to see much improvement with this team unless they fix something on the other end of the floor. With all that said, the Rockets have a good chance to win here as nine-point favorites in this matchup.

Sacramento Kings (14-21) - Los Angeles Lakers (8-28)

The Los Angeles Lakers (8-28) take on the host Sacramento Kings (14-21) at Sleep Train Arena on Thursday.

The Lakers come into this game in their best stretch of the season, despite getting blown out in their most recent game. They had won three-straight before losing by 21 points to the Golden State Warriors on Tuesday. They had to play that game without Kobe Bryant and D'Angelo Russell, so the loss was almost expected as 15-point underdogs. Both ends of the floor have been an issue this season though and while most people would say their defense has been the problem, it's more of an offensive issue. They now rank 28th in scoring and are one of the least efficient offenses in the NBA. Their defense isn’t much better though, as they rank 27th in points allowed. The owner was quoted saying that this season is about Kobe and that seems evident considering they are one of the worst teams in the NBA.

The Kings are finally playing some good basketball right now and they should have had a win in their most recent game. They held a seven-point lead with just over a minute left against the Dallas Mavericks and choked it away in double-overtime. DeMarcus Cousins has been on a absolute tear this week though, as he has 68 points and 36 rebounds in just two games played. Rajon Rondo missed the last game with a back issue, but is expected to return here in a fantastic matchup. The offense has been on point lately for Sacramento and they should have no problem going off again here against a terrible Lakers defense. In fact, look for the Kings to come into this matchup as a projected double-digit favorite for one of the first times this season.
