The Toronto Raptors (22-15) spend Friday night at Verizon Center to take on the struggling Washington Wizards (15-18).
The Raptors made quick work of the Brooklyn Nets on Tuesday, 91-74, to hold onto their two-game lead as the top team in the Atlantic Division. Jonas Valanciunas was Toronto's leading points scorer with 22 in the win, adding 11 rebounds for the double-double. Kyle Lowry added 17 points, 8 rebounds and 6 assists while DeMar DeRozan contributed 15 points. A major factor in the Raptors' ability to remain perched atop their division for the better part of the season has been their stout defense that ranks fourth in the league, allowing opponents an average of only 96.9 points per game. The team has two games remaining in its five-game road trip, before returning to the Air Canada Centre for an eight-game stint at home where they have an 11-6 record.
Washington has dropped four of its last five contests, the latest at home against the Cleveland Cavaliers on Wednesday despite a game effort. All five Wizards starters scored in double digits in the 121-115 defeat, with Garrett Temple leading the charge with 21 points. John Wall recorded another double-double with 20 points and 12 assists, making all four of his attempts from beyond the arc. Wall is second in the NBA in assists, averaging 9.8 per game, behind only Rajon Rondo. The team had an incredibly efficient shooting effort in the game, with 55.3% going in from the paint 58.3% from long range. Washington is a top-ten team from three point land, averaging 36.1% shooting on the season. With the majority of the Southeast struggling to start 2016, the time is now for the Wizards to right their ship and make a push out of last place in the division.

The slumping Orlando Magic (19-17) travel to Barclays Center to meet the Brooklyn Nets (10-25) on Friday night.
9-6 in November and 10-5 in December, the Magic now find themselves winless in 2016 and on a four-game skid. The team had a forgettable home court performance on Wednesday night, falling 96-86 to the Indiana Pacers in an important Eastern Conference match-up. Victor Oladipo led in scoring with 20 points, going 4-for-7 from long range. Oladipo has served his team well since being promoted off the bench to starting point guard earlier in the week. Nikola Vucevic added 17 points, while Evan Fournier put up 13. Elfrid Payton (ankle) has missed two consecutive games for the team and is listed as questionable for Friday’s contest. Orlando's current losing streak is its longest slide of their 2015-16 campaign.
The Nets were handed their eighth straight defeat at Barclays Center on Wednesday, losing 91-74 to the Toronto Raptors to fall to 6-12 at home. Brook Lopez led the team in scoring, as usual, with another double-double on 24 points and 13 boards. Bojan Bogdanovich had 12 points and Thaddeus Young contributed 11 points and 7 rebounds in a game that saw Brooklyn shoot only 39.7% from the field and connect on five three-point attempts. The 74-point effort was typical of the team's insipid offense this season, where the rank third-worst in the league, putting up an average of 96.4 points per game. The team faces tough competition in the coming days on the road against Detroit and hosting San Antonio.

The Denver Nuggets (13-23) go on the road to Memphis to face off against the Grizzlies (19-18) on Friday night.
The Nuggets finally put a halt to a six-game skid on Wednesday night, edging the Minnesota Timberwolves on the road in a low-scoring affair, 78-74. Danilo Gallinari led the team in production as one of only two players on the team to score in double digits, putting up 20 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists. Gallinari also made 6 of 7 shots from the foul line. Kostas Papanikolaou scored a double-double off the bench with 15 points and 10 rebounds while Denver shot a putrid 35.8% from the field. The team is 8th worst in the NBA in both offense and defense, averaging 98.8 points and allowing opponents to put up 103.4 points per game. The Nuggets are 5-11 at home and will return from Memphis for an eight-game stand at Pepsi Center against some of the best teams in the West, including Golden State and Oklahoma City.
The Grizzlies have been the picture of inconsistency all season long, losing their latest game on the road to the Oklahoma City Thunder, 112-94, as they remain in third place in the Southwest Division. Mario Chalmers, who has been a boon for the team since being acquired for their 2105-16 campaign, led Memphis in scoring off the bench with 23 points, 8 rebounds and 9 assists, making 4 of 8 three-point attempts in the process. Chalmers is averaging 10.5 points for the team on the season. Matt Barnes added 13 points but wasn't able to find a rhythm from long range, putting in only one triple in six attempts. Friday's contest will be the first of a six-game stretch at home for the Grizzlies.

- Grizzlies : Brandan Wright, Jordan Adams
- Nuggets : Wilson Chandler

The red-hot Cleveland Cavaliers (24-9) visit Minnesota on Friday night to take on the Timberwolves (12-24).
The Cavaliers spent Wednesday night building on their five-game tear to kick off the new year, beating the Washington Wizards on the road, 121-115. The team's starters seemed unstoppable, with LeBron James and Kyrie Irving combining for 66 points. James added 10 boards for the double-double and went 12-for-22 from the field. Irving has been in the zone since returning from injury in December, posting 32 point on Wednesday and is averaging 17.4 points since his comeback. J.R. Smith contributed 25 points and five three-pointers as Cleveland looks to have a lock on first place in the Eastern Conference for the foreseeable future. The team plays six of their next seven games away from Quicken Loans Arena where they own a somewhat pedestrian 9-8 record.
The promising Timberwolves are looking towards a bright future, as their present is anything but inspiring on the back of eight out of nine losses and four defeats in a row. Minnesota lost 78-74 at home to the Denver Nuggets on Wednesday, falling to 5-14 at Target Center. Still, flashes were on display for the team that Wolves fans hope will develop into a winning formula in years to come, as Karl-Anthony Towns led the tam in scoring with a 14-point, 14-rebound double-double. Andrew Wiggins added 11 points, shooting 4-for-14 from the paint. The team made only three long range shots all game, and find themselves in a freefall in the West (where they sit in 13th place) after losing earlier in the week on the road to the woeful Philadelphia 76ers.

The Indiana Pacers (20-15) will take on the New Orleans Pelicans (11-23) on Friday night at Smoothie King Center in New Orleans.
After suffering an overtime loss to the Heat on Monday night, the Pacers bounced back in Orlando, defeating the Magic 95-86 on Wednesday. Paul George had a game-high 20 points (5-13 FG, 1-6 3Pt, 9-9 FT), along with seven rebounds, three assists, and two steals in just under 36 minutes. George Hill, who missed Monday's loss due to food poisoning, was back in the starting lineup Wednesday and contributed 16 points (5-9 FG, 3-3 3Pt, 3-3 FT), three rebounds, three assists, and a steal in 34 minutes. The Pacers haven't lost to Pelicans since April 3, 2011 and will look to keep the streak alive on Friday night.
The Pelicans defeated the Mavericks on Saturday, but fell short in their rematch on Wednesday night, losing 100-91. It was a poor showing from the Pelicans, who lost to a Dallas team who only played 10 players, resting four of their regular starters. Even in the loss, Anthony Davis had a great showing with 26 points (11-25 FG, 0-3 3Pt, 4-5 FT), 12 rebounds, seven assists, three blocks, and two steals in 42 minutes. Tyreke Evans, who returned to the court after missing Saturday's win, contributed 16 points (6-12 FG, 1-4 3Pt, 3-4 FT), nine rebounds, five assists, and two steals in 35 minutes. Three-point specialist Ryan Anderson has been shaky of late, going 3-for-19 from beyond the arc in the past four games. With a win on Friday, the Pelicans will improve to .500 at home this season with an 8-8 mark.

The Dallas Mavericks (21-15) will take on the Milwaukee Bucks (14-23) on Friday night at BMO Harris Bradley Center in Milwaukee.
The Mavericks will head to Milwaukee looking for their third-straight win after defeating their division-rival New Orleans Pelicans 100-91 on Wednesday night. It was an impressive win for the Mavs following a double overtime victory over the Kings the night before. As a result of the double-overtime win, Dallas choose to rest four of their five starters and had only 10 players available for the game. Raymond felt led the team in scoring with 22 points (6-14 FG, 3-6 3Pt, 7-7 FT), six assists, and a steal in 36 minutes. Chandler Parsons, who was questionable with a hip contusion, contributed 21 points (9-16 FG, 0-5 3Pt, 3-3 FT), eight rebounds, and six assists in 31 minutes. All the starters should return to the court after their night off on Wednesday, including former Buck and All-Star candidate Zaza Pachulia. The Mavericks have won six straight over the Buck dating back to 2011.
The Bucks return home after swinging by Chicago on Tuesday for a game against the Bulls in which they were defeated 117-106. The Bucks only played nine players on Tuesday. Khris Middleton led the group with 26 points (10-21 FG, 5-10 3Pt, 1-1 FT), seven assists, four rebounds, and a steal in 38 minutes. Michael Carter-Williams added 20 points (9-14 FG, 1-1 3Pt, 1-1 FT), 12 assists, three rebounds, and two steals in 37 minutes. Robin Lopez contributed 19 points (9-12 FG, 1-1 FT), four rebounds, two blocks, and an assist in 35 minutes. The Knicks have been averaging 105.3 points per game during their three-game win streak. The Miami Heat (21-14) will take on the Phoenix Suns (15-24) at Talking Stick Resort Arena in Phoenix, AZ on Friday.
Miami comes into this game winning three of its last four and this game may mean more to the Heat than appears on the surface. This marks the return of Goran Dragic back to Phoenix after an ugly exit from there last February. Luckily for him and Miami, they are playing the Suns at the best time possible with Phoenix losing nine of its last 10. What's made the Heat so good this season is their defense, as they rank top-three in numerous defensive categories. This should be an easy win for them if they score 100-plus, considering the Suns offense has fallen apart since the loss of Eric Bledsoe. Look for Miami to use Dragic as much as possible here to stick it to his former team. The contrast of styles is interesting here as well, as the Heat are one of the three-slowest teams, while the Suns are one of the three-fastest teams in the league.
The Suns had a nine-game losing streak prior to winning their most recent game. They ended up beating the Charlotte Hornets on Wednesday, who are also struggling immensely right now. This Phoenix lineup is a shell of itself right now though, with players like Ronnie Price and Jon Leuer starting. The projected starting five at the beginning of the year was Tyson Chandler, Markieff Morris, P.J. Tucker, Eric Bledsoe and Brandon Knight. Considering Tucker and Chandler have been in and out of the lineup, the only one who remains a consistent starter has been Knight. It's a mixture of injuries and immaturity that has killed this team and they are looking like one of the worst teams in the NBA right now. That can be exemplified by the fact that they come into this matchup as a six-point underdog in their home building.

- Suns : Eric Bledsoe
- Heat : Josh McRoberts (?)

The Golden State Warriors (33-2) will play the Portland Trail Blazers (15-23) at Moda Center in Portland, OR on Friday.
Golden State has been a ridiculously good team this season, but they haven’t been as dominant lately as they were in the beginning of the year. While they have won four of their last five, they have only one by more than 10 points once in that span. That's obviously still very good, but it doesn’t even come close to their 20-point margins earlier in the year. That stretch directly correlates with an injury to Steph Curry, who's been in and out of the lineup with some shin issues. It was noted that it will take him four weeks to fully recover and this could be a problem all season if he continues to play through the injury. Don't be surprised if he rests regularly in the next few weeks to fully recover to get ready for an inevitable run at a title. In any case, Golden State comes into this game as a double-digit favorite.
The Trail Blazers have had a rough season, but nothing compares to the error they made in their most recent game. They were hosting a hot Los Angeles Clippers team and left themselves shorthanded with a “clerical” error. Apparently when sending in the official lineup, they accidentally left C.J. McCollum off the active roster and it left them without their best player as of late. That's an egregious error and it was no surprise that they lost that game by double-digits. That marks their third loss in their last four games, with all three of those being by double-figures. That rough stretch correlates with the return of Damian Lillard and it's quite strange that they are playing worse with arguably their best player back in the lineup. The Blazers have been slightly better at home though, as they come into this matchup 8-8 at the Moda Center this season.

- Blazers : X
- Warriors : Kevon Looney, Leandro Barbosa, Stephen Curry (?), James McAdoo (?), Festus Ezeli (?)

The Oklahoma City Thunder (25-11) will play the Los Angeles Lakers (8-29) at Staples Center in Los Angeles, CA on Friday.
Outside of one dud performance against the Sacramento Kings, the Thunder have been one of the best teams in the NBA. They lost that game to Sacramento without Kevin Durant and played some poor basketball. They were obviously happy to get him back for their most recent game in a dominant win. They won that game on Wednesday by 18 points over the Memphis Grizzlies, thanks to a near 20-20 game from Durant. Oklahoma City has already played the Lakers twice this season and both games were far from competitive. In fact, they won those games by a combined score of 238 to 163. This appears to be a mismatch on paper and the only silver lining for the Lakers is that the Thunder are barely over .500 on the road this season.
The Lakers have been playing some of their best basketball over the last five games and actually have a winning record in that span. In fact, they could be 4-1 if they could have pulled off a huge comeback against the Sacramento Kings on Thursday. Los Angeles overcame a 27-point deficit to nearly pull off a miraculous win. Kobe Bryant had 28 points, while D'Angelo Russell scored a career-high 27 in that comeback loss. With all that said, this is one of the biggest mismatches in the NBA, as the Lakers have lost by a combined 75 points in its first two games against the Thunder. That is why the Thunder are favored by double-digits on the road here.
