Two teams headed in opposite directions early in 2016 meet on Saturday afternoon in Los Angeles as the free-falling Charlotte Hornets (17-18) take on the white hot Clippers (23-13).
The Hornets are looking like a shell of the team that went 10-5 in November and 7-7 in December. Winless in 2016 and losers of eight of their last ten match-ups, the team that once threatened to make some noise in the Southeast now sits at fourth place in the division and are coming off a 111-102 road loss to the Phoenix Suns on Wednesday night. All five Hornets starters managed to post double digits in the defeat, which saw Kemba Walker once again lead the club in scoring with 25 points, 4 rebounds and 6 assists, while Jeremy Lin and Marvin Williams each contributed 15 points apiece. Cody Zeller put up a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds in a game that saw Charlotte unable to overcome a slew of defensive flubs down the stretch. Part of the team's woes comes down to their injured list, which features Michael Kidd-Gilchrist (shoulder) out for the season and Al Jefferson (knee) out as long as six weeks after undergoing meniscus tear surgery last week.
The Clippers, meanwhile, have entered the new year as the hottest team in the NBA after a somewhat bumpy start to the season. The unit was 10-8 at the end of November but have won seven consecutive games, the latest on the road against the Portland Trail Blazers on Wednesday, 109-98. Los Angeles improved to 12-7 away from Staples Center as Chris Paul led the way for the team with 21 points and 19 assists. Adding another double-double was Andre Jordan with 14 points and 14 boards as the Clippers begin to close the gap in the West, where they currently sit at fourth place. Wednesday's contest saw the team score 50.6% from the field, a strong point for Los Angeles as they currently rank fourth in the league with an average of 46.3% field goal shooting per game this season. The Clippers also rank fifth in offense, averaging 103.8 points per contest. Saturday’s game is the first of five at home for the team before heading out on a five-game road trip later in the month

The surging Chicago Bulls (22-12) take to the road to meet the Atlanta Hawks (22-15) early Saturday evening in an Eastern Conference showdown.
After a shaky December where they had an 8-7 record yet still managed to hold onto second place in the Eastern Conference, the Bulls have won six games in a row, their latest a Thursday night victory over the Boston Celtics, 101-92, at United Center. Chicago are now 16-5 at home after a match-up that saw all five Bulls starters contribute double digit scoring. Jimmy Butler had 19 points and 10 assists, Pau Gasol recorded 17 points and 18 rebounds and Derrick Rose added 18 points and 7 boards as the team seems to be finding their form as the midway point of the season comes into focus. Despite missing Joakim Noah (shoulder) since December, Chicago have remained in top form in the Eastern Conference, yet can't quite close the gap with the first place Cleveland Cavaliers who are also on a tear at the moment. The team expects Noah to suit up again some time next week.
The Hawks demolished the 76ers in Philadelphia on Thursday night, 126-98, to put a halt to a two-game losing streak and maintain a neck-and-neck fight with the Miami Heat for first place in the Southeast Division. Kent Bazemore led Atlanta in scoring in a game that saw the team get point contributions from 13 players. Paul Millsap and Al Horford each had 18 points, with the tandem also combining for 15 rebounds. Dennis Schroder scored 14 points off the bench, shooting 5-for-8 from the paint and 2-for-3 from long range. Atlanta ranks seventh in the NBA in field goal shooting percentage, averaging 46% per game this season. That trend continued to work in the team's favor on Thursday, as they shot 53.3%. Despite riding hot hands into the weekend, the Hawks have lost seven of their last nine games to the Bulls.

Two teams looking to right their collective ships face off in Florida on Saturday night as the Washington Wizards (15-19) play the Orlando Magic (20-17).
Washington have lost five of their last six games, the latest defeat coming at the hands of the Toronto Raptors on Friday night at Verizon Center, where the team is now 8-11. John Wall was the leading producer for the Wizards in the 97-88 loss, putting up 21 points put having an uncharacteristically quiet night in the assist category with only 4. Wall is averaging 9.8 assists for the team this season, good enough for second place in the league. Marcin Gortat put up a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds, but it was shooting accuracy that ultimately felled them again, as they shot 39.3% from the field. Bradley Beal (leg) still leads the team in scoring with an average of 19.8 points per game despite missing 14 games for Washington. The club expects his return to the starting lineup in a matter of days.
The Magic put a much-needed end to a four-game skid on Friday night in Brooklyn, topping the Nets 83-77 and hopefully out of an offensive funk after turning quite a few heads in the first third of the season. Victor Oladipo and Nikola Vucevic both had 20 points apiece, Vucevic with a double-double on 10 rebounds and Oladipo with 9 boards himself. Oladipo also contributed nearly half of Orlando's points from beyond the arc in the win with six three-pointers on eight attempts. The Magic currently sit at third place in the Southeast Division, 2.5 games behind the first place Miami Heat.

Deux équipe a la ramasse complet, et beaucoup d'absence chez les Wizards. Orlando peuvent gagner chez eux ! Je m'attend a un réveil ce soir !

The Palace of Auburn Hills is the scene for a Saturday night clash between the Brooklyn Nets (10-25) and Detroit Pistons (20-16).
If anything, the Nets will be happy to get away from Barclays Center this weekend, as the team has now dropped nine consecutive games at home. Their latest defeat came in a sloppy Friday night effort against the visiting Magic, where they fell 83-77. True to form, Brook Lopez remained a bright spot for the club, leading in points production with 17 while adding 8 rebounds and shooting 6 of 15 from the field. Joe Johnson added 13 points for a Brooklyn club that is struggling to find anything resembling an offensive rhythm in their 2015-16 campaign, where they rank ahead of only the Memphis Grizzlies and Philadelphia 76ers for third worst offense in the league, averaging only 96.4 points per game. The team returns to their home turf all next week for match-ups against the Spurs, Knicks and Trail Blazers.
The Pistons continue to make their case that they are indeed a Playoff calibre team coming out of the East, where they sit in seventh place following a 99-94 road victory over the Boston Celtics on Wednesday night. Reggie Jackson led Detroit in points with 24 while making 7 of 8 shots from the free throw line. Andre Drummond had 13 points on the night, but the NBA rebound leader had a rather subdued night off the glass with only 5 rebounds. Drummond is averaging a monster 15.7 boards this season. Stanley Johnson had a double-double off the bench with 11 points and 10 rebounds as the Pistons find themselves a vastly improved unit over last year's lineup. Detroit play San Antonio, Golden State and Chicago all within the next week.

The Toronto Raptors (23-15) will play the Philadelphia 76ers (4-34) at Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia on Saturday.
The Raptors come into this game with a modest two-game road winning streak. The more impressive of those two wins came against the Washington Wizards on Friday. In that game, they got a season-high 35 points from DeMar DeRozan and another double-double from Kyle Lowry. That backcourt has been one of the best in the NBA this season and they truly carry this team nearly every single night. The defense was spectacular in these two road wins as well and that's been the key to success all season for this Toronto team, as they rank fourth in points allowed. In fact, they have given up 100 or more points in every loss since mid-November, so it's clear the defense is the major correlation to success for this team. Considering that trend, they look like a good bet to win here, as they face one of the worst offenses in the NBA.
The Sixers are not synonymous with winning, but they are a far better team right now than a couple of weeks ago. Philadelphia has won three of their last seven games and have been playing much more competitively in their losses. That stretch directly correlates with the addition of Ish Smith and he's been great in his stead with the Sixers. Not only has he been putting up good numbers, Smith has controlled the offense and limited the turnovers for the most turnover prone team in the NBA. Smith has also been doing a great job of reviving Nerlens Noel, who was terrible for the first two months of the season. Toronto comes into this game as a nine-point favorite, but it could be closer then that with the Raptors playing in the second half of a back-to-back here.

Les Raptors doivent gagner des matchs comme ça et ne surtout pas les manquer !

The Miami Heat (22-14) will take on the Utah Jazz (15-20) at Vivint Smart Home Arena in Salt Lake City, UT on Saturday.
The Heat come into this matchup winning four of their last five and winning with some stellar defense. They now rank in the top-three in numerous defensive statistics and they should have no problem slowing down this terrible Jazz offense. The one concern is that this is the second half of a back-to-back and many of these Miami veterans struggle in those circumstances. In that game, they ended up beating the Phoenix Suns with some big plays down the stretch. That was a revenge game for Goran Dragic and he had one of his best games of the season, tallying 22 points and seven assists. The paces of the Jazz and Heat should make this one of the slowest games of the season thus far.
The Jazz have lost three-straight and they just can't seem to stay healthy. They have been without Derrick Favors, Rudy Gobert and Alec Burks for some time now and right when Gobert returned, another top-scorer went down. Rodney Hood went down with an ankle injury in their most recent game and he's been one of their best scorers as of late. The good news is that Gobert came off the bench in that same game against the Houston Rockets after missing over a month of action. With Favors due back soon as well, things may be finally turning around for this injury riddled team. Even with all the injuries, the team has still been hovering around .500 and playing some great defense. Once Gobert and Favors are back, this team will go back to one of the three-best defensive teams in the NBA. Look for this to be a close and low-scoring game, as the Heat come in as ashort favorite with a projected minuscule total of 185.

The Golden State Warriors (34-2) will play the Sacramento Kings (15-21) at Sleep Train Arena in Sacramento, CA on Saturday.
Golden State just keeps chugging along and winning games. Most recently, they scored 128 points en route to another dominating win over the Portland Trail Blazers. Klay Thompson and Steph Curry combined for 62 points while Draymond Green recorded yet another triple-double. That's been the recipe all season and it's nearly impossible to beat this team at full force. What's scary about this particular matchup is the Kings defense against the Warriors offense. Not only does Sacramento play some of the worst defense in the NBA, they also play at an incredibly high pace. That opens the door for a huge game from the Warriors and it would be no surprise to see them drop 120-plus points once again.
Things are finally looking up for Sacramento right now and they find themselves in the playoff run out of nowhere. They only sit half a game out of the eight-seed in the west and much of that can be attributed to their home court success. The Kings are 10-9 at Sleep Train Arena, opposed to a 5-16 record on the road. Sacramento also comes into this game winning three of their last four, with the one loss coming in heartbreaking fashion. They held a seven-point lead with under two minutes left in that loss to the Dallas Mavericks and ended up losing in double-overtime. The reason for the recenr success has been DeMarcus Cousins. Boogie Cousins is currently averaging 30 points, 13.2 rebounds, 2.8 assists, 1.8 steals and 1.2 blocks per game over his last five games. Those are MVP type numbers and fans have to be encouraged that the team is finally winning with Cousins playing at an elite level. Look for this game to be more competitive than the average fan would anticipate, as the Warriors come in as just six-point favorites.
